Another Idiot Named Rush

Published by politicalanimal at 1:51 pm under Politics Edit This

Someone needs to remind Illinois representative and former Black Panther Bobby Rush that we’re not in Sixtiesland anymore.

According to the Associated Press, the congressman recently tried to blackmail the Senate Democratic Caucus into accepting disgraced Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s Senate appointee, former state Attorney General Roland Burris.

“Let me just remind you that there presently is no African-American in the U.S. Senate,” said Rep. Rush.

“I will ask you to not hang and lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointer,” he added. “I don’t think that anyone — any U.S. senator who’s sitting in the Senate right now — wants to go on record to deny one African-American for being seated in the U.S. Senate.”

Fortunately, the Democratic leadership is having none of this. And it’s also good to know that President-elect Barack Obama has got their back.

“This is not about Mr. Burris; it is about the integrity of a governor accused of attempting to sell this United States Senate seat,” Majority Leader Harry Reid and his deputy, Sen. Dick Durbin, said in a statement. “Anyone appointed by Gov. Blagojevich cannot be an effective representative of the people of Illinois and, as we have said, will not be seated by the Democratic caucus.”

“They cannot accept an appointment made by a governor who is accused of selling this very Senate seat,” Obama said in a statement. “I agree with their decision, and it is extremely disappointing that Governor Blagojevich has chosen to ignore it.”

With regard to the public outrage over Gov. Blagojevich’s conduct, Rush said earlier today that “All these folks opposed to Blagojevich need to take a chill pill.”

At this point, it’s hard to tell who is more out of touch with reality – Blago, Rush, or Burris. Despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the governor feels he has done nothing wrong and is going about his business as though nothing has even happened. The congressman thinks nothing of uttering remarks that may be appropriate at a Black Panther reunion, but have no place in the United States Government. And the former state attorney general thinks there’s absolutely nothing wrong with accepting a seriously tainted appointment.

According to Mr. Burris, Blago “has the constitutional and statutory authority to make those appointments … and I have absolutely nothing to do with those problems.”

Uh-huh. Whatever you say buddy!

Whoever replaces Blago should call Rush’s bluff and appoint either Clarence Thomas or Michael Jackson to Obama’s Senate seat.
