Is Michael Steele the New Face of the GOP?
Congratulations to former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele for winning the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee…NOT!!!
Before I continue, I’d better confess something right away. I’ve hated The Man of Steele ever since the 2008 Republican primaries when he said Texas Republican and former presidential candidate Ron Paul should be kicked out of the Grimy Old Party for daring to suggest that our imperialistic, warmongering and financially insolvent foreign policy might not be a good thing.
Look, I’m sure Mr. Steele is a great guy personally and I’ve noticed he’s more moderate than many of his cohorts (he was certainly the most moderate Republican running for RNC chairman), but if his past statements about Rep. Paul are any indication, the “new face of the GOP” will probably not be making that “big tent” any bigger – at least when it comes to ideology.
According to Yahoo! News, the new RNC chairman “struck a tone of inclusiveness” in his victory speech.
“We’re going to say to friend and foe alike: We want you to be a part of us, we want you to with be with us, and for those who wish to obstruct, get ready to get knocked over,” Steele said.
Sure, whatever you say, Mr. S.
I suppose I should pay some lip service to Steele’s historic triumph. Whoopee. I guess I don’t go in for that sort of thing. I didn’t think Obama becoming the first black president was that big a deal, either. I was more concerned about what he’d do once in office. My personal choices for president were all white men – Ron Paul, Jim Webb, and Mark Warner.
Still, there’s no denying that the GOP is finally acquiring a diverse palette – or trying to at least. Just look at four of the rising stars of the Party of Lincoln – Vietnamese-American Louisiana Rep. Joseph Cao (reliably conservative), Indian-American (No, the OTHER kind of Indian) Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal (solidly conservative), Jewish-American Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor (annoyingly conservative), Female-American Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, (wickedly conservative), and now African-American RNC Chairman Michael Steele (not really conservative, but still a jerk).
Sorry, but I think I’d rather have those moderate Republican WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants) from New England back. Where are you, Mr. Chafee and Mr. Jeffords? Come back, Mr. Weld! No, you can go, Mr. Mussolini – oops, I mean Guliani.

A striped tie? Old man glasses? This is the blackest Republican they could find?
“A striped tie? Old man glasses? This is the blackest Republican they could find?”
Yeah, apparently the second blackest Republican they could dig up was Sean Hannity.
“Yeah, apparently the second blackest Republican they could dig up was Sean Hannity.”
Instant classic.
