Durbin Begs Burris to Resign, to No Avail

Illinois Sen. Roland Burris has a message for his fellow Democrats in the world’s most deliberative body: I’m stayin’ here whether you dig it or not, so suck it up and deal with it, bitches!

The New York Times reports Burris “refused to resign on Tuesday, rebuffing a call from the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat, who argued that the embattled Illinois lawmaker has little hope next year of winning the seat vacated by President Barack Obama.”

”I told him that under the circumstances, I would resign,” fellow Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin told reporters after a meeting with Burris that lasted an hour. ”He said, ‘I’m not going to resign.”’

”I can’t force him,” Durbin added.

No, Mr. Durbin, you can’t.

Burris was appointed to the seat by former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was impeached and booted from office after his arrest on federal corruption charges. Blagojevich had been accused of, among other things, attempting to sell Obama’s seat to the highest bidder.

When Burris was first named as the president’s successor in the Senate, many people believed that he was squeaky clean. Now it appears that the new senator lied about the circumstances under which he was appointed.

Durbin is not the only person giving Burris a hard time. The senator finds himself being pressured to resign from a range of groups, including politicians, black ministers, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, and several newspapers from his home state.

I have to say, I am beginning to like this guy. Sure, he is probably a crook, but you have to respect a man who has no problem telling the stuffed suits in Washington to go to hell. And his hairdo is much cooler than Blago’s!

It’s funny how Blago has managed to cause a lot of trouble for members of his own party even when’s he out of office.

He’s kind of growing on me, too. He doesn’t seem all that bright, but any senator that says STFU to his colleagues gets a lot of respect points.
